Boundaries and Bids: Thrive Club's “Wickets & Wallet” Turns Cricket Fever into a Masterclass on Finance
IPL-style mock auction at CSIT Auditorium sees student teams battle it out with virtual budgets, sharp strategy and a lot of paper currency
The CSIT Auditorium was transformed into a buzzing IPL boardroom on 17th September 2026, as the Thrive Club hosted its much-anticipated event “Wickets & Wallet – IPL Auction 2026.” Beginning at 10:00 AM, the event drew student teams from across the campus, each armed with a virtual budget, a game plan, and a shared love for cricket and competitive strategy.
Part sport, part strategy game and part crash course in money management, the auction asked participants to think less like fans and more like franchise owners – weighing player ratings against base prices, and squad balance against a rapidly shrinking purse.
A Bidding War Like No Other:Organised in teams of four, participants competed for a place at the podium, where a running virtual budget had to stretch across an entire playing squad. Players were auctioned one by one, each carrying a base price and a performance rating, and it was up to every team to decide how far they were willing to stretch their wallets for star power – and when to hold back.
Energetic student anchors kept the room engaged throughout, calling out bids, tracking remaining budgets on the projector screen, and building the kind of suspense usually reserved for an actual IPL mega-auction. Emcees took turns at the podium – fittingly decorated with folds of play money – as teams huddled to plan their next move before the gavel, quite literally, came down on each lot.
More Than a Game:What set “Wickets & Wallet” apart from a straightforward quiz or cricket trivia contest was its evaluation lens. Teams were not judged merely on the star names they acquired, but on squad composition and balance, smart utilisation of budget, quality of player selection, the overall rating of the assembled team, and how wisely they managed their remaining funds and bidding strategy through the rounds. The judges made it clear at the outset that their decision, based strictly on these parameters, would be final and binding – a rule that kept every team focused on substance over showmanship.
The format rewarded composure as much as ambition. Teams that chased marquee names too early often found themselves short of funds for crucial finishing pieces, while more patient bidders built well-rounded squads that impressed the judging panel on overall balance.
Prizes and Participation:The event carried a participation fee of ₹400 per team, with each team comprising four members. Winners were rewarded handsomely for their bidding acumen: the champions took home a first prize of ₹3000, the runners-up secured ₹2000, and the third-placed team received ₹1000. The winning squad hailed from AKGEC, while the second and third-placed teams represented AKGIM, making the auction a spirited cross-institute contest. Certificates were presented to the winning participants on stage, in the presence of faculty members and the Thrive Club's core committee.
Behind the Scenes:The event was organised by the Thrive Club, with student coordinators Shriyansh Pandey and Rashika Agrawal steering the planning and on-ground execution. From the hand-crafted “Wickets & Wallet” backdrop and podiums lined with play money to the smooth running of the bidding rounds, the organising team's attention to detail gave the auction its distinctly IPL-worthy flavour.
Detailed auction rules and squad requirements were explained to participants before bidding began, ensuring that every team entered the arena on equal footing – and that the eventual outcome truly reflected each team's strategic thinking rather than any ambiguity in the rules.
